I was 28 when I became type 1, no pump,
do the shots

How do they do that? There were 6-7 ads
for drugs, now they are gone! Hmmmm...anyhow, I wear an insulin pump. I mean,
it's great to have the pump, it certainly helps a type 1 diabetic beyond belief,
but there are, as with anything, some problems. I was considered "brittle" and
my sugars jumped all over the place. When I learned how to operate the pump, to
my body's needs,(we are all different) that was mostly solved. The problems with
a pump are no worse than injections. I became a type 1 at 50 years old! It
happens. I used injections, following the "intensive insulin therapy" that I
learned at the Mayo Clinic, inpatient. I learned a lot!

Sometimes taken better care of yourself
doesn't make a differece. It has nothing to do with getting diabetes. Maybe for
the over weight people, but some of us just get it and it doesn't matter how
well we took care of ourself's before.

They don't take care of themselves. And
they pick on me for being a "picky eater". I don't want to have to explain to
everyone I meet that I have diabetes and have to watch my blood sugar. It
becomes tiresome. So I skip the bagels and donuts and cookies and I'm a picky
eater. Ugh.

I know what you mean, even though
i've got this disease my friends are still not taking care of themselves, eating
fast food all the time and drinking too much, unfortunatley getting sick is
probably the only thing that will make them change.

I hate this disease. I'm so sick of

better care of themselves.

I don't use a pump but when your doing
needles you get used to it. It doesn't bother me to take a shoot when I'm out. I
just lift a corner of my shirt and stick it or go to the rest room and do it. I
don't even think about who is around, Is anyone staring, I just don't care. I've
been doing it for 23 years. And yes we are paying alot out in medical bills and
drugs. But what can you do, if you get yours free you are very lucky.

sounds like everyone here is
paying a lot in medical bills, I feel so lucky, I got diagnosed about3 months
ago but because I live in England everything is completely free, its just
amazing. I really feel for you guys, don't think I could afford to pay for all
the stuf i'm using

Do type 1's get anything benifit from
taking byetta? I've heard alot about it. And if it makes you lose weight I would
be willing to try it. But I'm type 1. A friend called this weekend and their 8
year old was just diagonosed as type 1. That is really sad, I think about all
the problems I have and wonder how does an 8 year old handle all this.
On Mon Oct 23 17:35:04 2006 () said:
I take Byetta and it's great. Expensive
tho, and only for type 2's tho.I'm still after three months , getting use to the
needles.

Yes, I had to pay for it, my insurance
doesn't cover flu shots. You really need to check around on prices. One clinic
was 33 and another one was 28. The public health nurse at the court house is
only 18. So it pays to shop around, isn't it something that some clinic's can
mark up the price so much.

The flu shot has never made me sick,
sometimes my arm is sore. I've heard alot of people say that they get sick, but
it isn't from the flu shot. It's because you already have the germs in your
system.

Now the holidays are creeping up on us. I'm suppose to get a flu shot this week
but have caught a cold, will they still give it to me? or will I have to
wait.

If you have Ins. there are other costs.
Tubing & reservoir's to hold insulin in the pump. Min. 100.00+ a month. That
should be taken into consideration. You could try calling Minimed:
1-800-726-3059 Maybe Ex. 7080, Cust service. As a type 1, depending on how it's
affected you, there may be a way. I'm not sure. My pump was about 8,000. Just a
consultation wouldn't hurt. Good luck.

I am type 1`. And I have checked into
getting one. I have a huge deductable that I would have to pay and the insurance
won't pay for all of it. They said they could put me on a payment plan, but when
your not working that is a little hard to do. My neighbor said she paid 10,000
for her pump.

Insulin pumps...are you a type 1? I
think they are the only ones that can wear a pump. I wear one...they are
expensive, but Ins. helps. Go to www.minimed.com for info. That's one type of
pump.

Thanks for the answer. I never realized
there were different types of insulin for different jobs. I have respect for you

I take Lantus twice a day. For some
people it doesn't last 24 hours. Mine wears off in the afternoon and my BS will
go really high. So I take two shots, one at seven in the moring and the other at
seven at night, they have to be 12 hours apart.
On Tue Oct 3 08:28:53 2006 () said:
Lantus is a non-peaking, 24 hour
insulin. It can't be used to bring high sugars down. It's a basal insulin. If
high sugar, then I use Humalog...fast acting, 15 minutes and it begins to lower
sugars.
On Tue Oct 3 06:13:24 2006 () said:
I'm not on insulin ... yet. So I don't
know much about them. Please don't laugh but can you tell me what lantus is?
On Mon Oct 2 09:41:24 2006 () said:
I wish my fasting blood sugars where
120. Mine ussally run about 130 to 250. Yesterday for some reason I was running
in the 300. I raked part of the yard and at lunch time was 80. Ate lunch and
didn't take any insulin, was going to wait till I was done eating. Got a phone
call and then didn't feel right, took another test and was down to 62 and so I
ate a little bit more. They where low all afternoon and late afternoon started
coming up, took some insulin and then they jumped to 300 took 12 units and it
was supper time and it was 322 so took 12 more units and didn't eat supper by
nine last night they finally came down to 185. Since I started to take lantus,
it seems to hold my sugars down and not let them come up, but when they come up,
they just keep going up and you can take a whole bottle of insulin and they
won't come down, I think it's the lantus. The first year I took lantus I loved
it and had really good luck with it, but it seems like it doesn't work anymore.
I have talked to the dr about this and my A1C went up to 9.1 but he didn't
change anything. I have another appoitment on the 17th and hoping that he
changes something. But I don't know what else is out there and what he could
change. If you don't take lantus the only other thing out there is humilin n
isn't it?
