I've been diabetic for over 22 years and my family still doesn't understand or take it seriously. When I have asked for help to stay on my diet, or someone to go walking with me they have never been there for me. And never will, I gave up on trying to get there help years ago. If you stopped a normal person on the street, they could tell you more about diabetes then my family could. They are clueless and which to stay that way.

That is what this site is all about. Getting info and help from others. Because there is a few sick minded people on here, just ignore them and keep writing. Can't let a few bad eggs spoil the whole bunch. I enjoy coming on here with my problems. and listen to others problems to see if they have the same stuff going on. I have learned that you don't always get a reply, everyone is worried about their weight, blood sugars and complaiations. We are all in the same boat. And yes, it does suck.

This is available and it is the patient's responsibility to ask for information. It's unfortunate that some would use a broad brush to paint all physicians as neglectful of their patient's health and education. That is not my experience at all. My doctor and clinic are very active in helping Type 2 diabetics learn all they can, make the proper appointments for care of feet, eyes, A1c tests, diet, exercise programs, etc. Others experience may be different. If you have a doctor that is not pro-active, then do whatever is necessary to educate yourself. I just don't buy into placing all the blame on the physicians.

On Wed Mar 15 06:53:43 2006 () said:
i gotta agree with betty. docs just don't spend time on this. i'm not saying it's not my responsibility, but when you get diagnosed, you should at least be told the seriousness of it and where to get more info.

On Tue Mar 14 09:41:55 2006 () said:
Betty, Betty, Betty. As a diabetic, and with all of the info on Type II on the internet, saying that it isn't taught is a major cop-out. It is YOUR responsibility to get this and LEARN IT. Think about this the next time you're surfing for sugary cake or pie recipes on the internet and wondering why your sugar is 500. SHEESH!

On Mon Mar 13 20:30:51 2006 () said:
To Betty, 50 years is a long time to live with diabetes. Do you have alot of problems because of it, or have you been able to manage it? I've had it for 22 years, but can't manage it. Have alot of compliations.

What makes me furious about education regarding managaing Diabetes, is that it's not being taught to those with Type 2 Diabees. There are Type 2 patients being treated by doctors who have very little information, on how to educate their patients. I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for almost 50 years and keep abreast of how far research has come in managing our disease. When I talk to friends or relatives who now have Type 2, they aren't aware of certain things that must be done once diagnosed like; seeing a nutritionist or dietitian; diet and exercise to help maintain managable bgs; testing bg often; being aware of a1c; visits to dentist and podiatrist. The education for managing this disease is sorely lacking

I would like to hear what you think???? I have handed in my notice at work, after seven years, as a care assistant in an operating theatre. I have another Job as a sports assistant, I was told about 6months ago I could not go back into theatres as I was an unstable Diabetic.... yes I do occasionally have hypos, but not that often and I do know when I am going low, I went to my diabetic consultant, told her what was said, she asked for a letter off my manager, who then refused and said that it was not her that had said it, it was infact the deputy manager, she had then said that I needed to have this log book ticked off to say that I was compotent in theatre, I had basicly turned round and told her "how can I do that, if you wont let me back into theatre?" There are people who are actually scrubbing up for cases that have epilepsy, now I am not sure if they have signs when they are going to have a seizure?? The reason I am bringing this up as I have read that there are quite a few people in england anyway that are losing their jobs because they have diabetes. Now I know that I wasnt sacked, but I do feel in a way that I was pushed out....... What do you think?

Dear O...If you are low income, there is a way to get a pump, with a DR's RX for one. Call Minimed: 1-800-726-3059. Talk to Robin X 4249 She can probably direct you to someone who can tell you what you need,,,for your State, etc. don't give up! I had a low income, when I got my pump. I am in Minnesota. Write if you like.

On Fri Mar 3 09:02:03 2006 () said:
The dr has been trying to talk me into a pump for years and I'm finally starting to come around to the idea. They checked into for me and it would cost 3,000 dollars to get started. I guess that puts an end to that. I had no idea they where that expensive. We qualify for low income program and that would pay for half, but there is still no way we can afford that. What do they expect people to do. They complain all the time about the burden of the cost of meds and stuff on the older people, but what do they think about the younger ones that are sick, they must think that we are made of money. That makes me mad. Sure the elderly need a break but so does everyone else that is sick. They want to stay as healthy as you can,but how are you suppose to do that when you can't afford things. Life just sucks sometimes!

We use a "basal" base, and a "bolus" when we eat. We have a base (it can vary, imitates the pancreas, mine is: .7/hr, total.) Also, I program units per 15 of carbo's (mine) such as.. meal: 45 grams carbo's. program 3 units insulin (Novolog) get to eat in 15 min, plus I can add 2 units for chocolate! Yes! So, it's 5 units. Type 1 diabetes is not like type 2. I use a Paradigm pump, from Minimed. Check it out.
