THE DIABETES EDUCATION AND RESEARCH CENTER RECEIVES $4,011.41 GRANT IN SUPPORT OF ITS DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAM, PATIENT ADVOCATE ACTIVITIES, AND RELATED OPERATIONS.

The Diabetes Education and Research Center, PO Box 897, Philadelphia, PA, has received a $4,011.41 grant from the Diabetes Education and Research Center Endowment Fund of The Philadelphia Foundation to support its diabetes education and patient advocate activities, and related operations. Announcement of the grant was made by R. Andrew Swinney, President of the Foundation, whose Board of Managers approved the grant on June 11, 2007. Dr. Theodore Duncan, president and executive director of the Diabetes Education and Research Center, said the funds would be used for continued operation of its community-based patient advocate activities, its wide-reaching Diabetes News and Information Web Journal, and other general program support.

The Diabetes Education and Research Center is a non-profit organization serving the needs of people living in Philadelphia and surrounding communities. It was established in 1967 to supplement the efforts of the Garfield G. Duncan Research Foundation. The goal of the Foundation was to improve the health of people with diabetes. It met that goal by partaking in clinical trial research and by establishing an on-site, accredited Diabetes Education Program. Today, the Diabetes Education and Research Center carries on the work of the Foundation by providing local diabetes patients with contact information for companies, health professionals, and other individuals and organizations that deliver necessary products or services, and by providing education through its timely News and Information Web Journal.

As Southeastern Pennsylvania's primary provider of philanthropic services, The Philadelphia Foundation manages more than 750 charitable funds established by caring families who want to give something back to their community. Revenue generated from these funds provides grants and scholarships to over 1,000 cultural, educational and humanitarian programs, exactly as the donors intend.
